Path Forward - Skills-building Electives

At Hila, we aim to empower our students beyond the basic curriculum by offering "path forward" opportunities to support them in taking next steps in online education and career development.   Current skills-building electives include: 

Media Skills: Introduction to Photography 

Led by a renowned Afghan photojournalist and an internationally exhibited American fine art photographer, this hands-on course invites students to explore photography as a powerful tool for storytelling and self-expression. Participants gain both technical skills and a deeper understanding of visual narratives.  

Media Skills: Videography and Editing

In Fall 2025, our photography students began an inspiring new videography and storytelling course led by RefocusMedia, with whom we have a partnership.  The course empowers young creators through visual arts. Each week, students learn how to use their phones to capture light, movement and emotions, transforming everyday scenes from their homes into short, vibrant videos. These classes not only build technical skills but also confidence in self-expression. 

Workshop: How to Turn an Idea into a Business

This workshop is not necessarily designed only for those intending to start a business, though it can certainly serve as an excellent starting point for them. In this workshop, the main focus is on ways of seeing, collaborating with others, giving constructive feedback, and ultimately learning the process of creation. In this workshop, students learn:    • How to filter and evaluate the many ideas that come to mind,  • How to identify the first steps for creating based on an idea • How to engage others in ideas and projects • How to give constructive feedback and use it effectively in one’s work.

Business Mentorship 

We offer business mentorship to students who would like to start their own business.  This includes coaching on setting up business plans and evaluating financing options.

Information Technology (IT) Courses

In association with a sister NGO in Paris, we offer our students to opportunity to enroll in IT courses on Coursera, a global online course provider that offers certifications, and degrees in a variety of subjects.  An IT expert guides students interested in developing coding and IT skills in the selection of courses and in the successful completion of courses and certificates.  

An Emerging Technologies Program sponsored by IBM will be offered in the first half of 2026.
